Here’s a quirky little game of fantasy fire fighting that is well worth a closer look. The Brigade is on kickstarter now. It’s already blazed its way through its funding target and is steadily burning through some hot stretch goals….. I think I’ve burned myself out on fire related puns a little early, so lets take a closer look at the game!
The Brigade takes place in the fictional town of Tinderbox and sees players take on the role of rival fire wardens, as they compete to protect the towns citizens. The town of Tinderbox is represented by a grid of unique location tiles randomly placed around the Pyromancers University. Each player starts in a fire house on one corner of the board.
As the flames ravage the town, players will need to manoeuvre their crew and water wagon through the streets of Tinderbox in an attempt to control the blaze. As players successfully quell the flames they will have the opportunity to spread word of their heroic deeds, granting them the loyalty of the townsfolk, and pushing them closer to their ultimate aim of becoming Fire Chief of Tinderbox! Additionally, players will have the opportunity to upgrade their personal fire house and hire new crew, granting unique abilities and skills. All the time they’ll be managing their resources and trying to stay one step ahead of the blazing inferno.
The Brigade is set in a delightful fantasy world that has been described as a combination of Terry Pratchett’s ‘Discworld’ book series and Martin Scorsese’s ‘Gangs of New York’. And while that may seem like an ambitious comparison point, you only have to take a look at some of the gorgeous artwork to realise that this is a game born out of love and commitment with a strong sense of theme.
The theme is both quirky and unique and is sure to find an audiance. The artwork looks absolutely gorgeous and the modular set- up of the town is sure to provide some fun replay value. Games are expected to last around 10-15 minutes per player, so this one shouldn’t outstay its welcome at the table. If you want to see more of the game, head on over to their kickstarter right now. There’s still a few weeks to back this one and it’s sure to be a lot of fun on the table. If the current success of The Brigade is any indicator I’m sure we will see lots more from Red Genie Games.
